Who makes decisions regarding instructional program, budget, and staffing?
All of our schools have a high level of autonomy over instruction, budget, staffing, and accountability, and teacher leaders have an important voice in shaping these decisions.
What professional development opportunities are available at EFC?
Every teacher receives an individualized development plan that can include individualized coaching, release time to observe other teachers and visit other schools, and participation in workshops and conferences. All teachers collaborate in grade level teams, do grade-level and cross-grade observations, participate in weekly site-level professional development, in organization-wide professional development, and in data-based cycles of inquiry.
New teachers receive intensive coaching, an additional week of summer professional development, a grade-level mentor teacher, and additional release time to observe other teachers.

A high level of consistency across grade-level teams is expected. Grade-level teams collaborate frequently to share classroom culture and set-up practices, and plan lessons and student interventions.
What are EFC’s teacher leadership opportunities?
EFC is working on an innovative teacher leadership pipeline program where teachers are acknowledged and rewarded as demonstration teachers, mentor teachers, coaches, grade-level facilitators, professional developers, and curriculum developers. Every site has an instructional leadership team and organization-wide teachers participate on the staff leadership council, the instructional management team, the strategic planning team, board committees, and on other ad hoc strategic initiatives.

How are substitutes supported at EFC?
We treat substitute teachers like we treat our teachers – as invaluable members of our team. Substitutes are provided quality lesson plans, regular check-ins by school leadership, and support as needed by grade-level leads. Long-term substitutes are treated as part of the faculty, and new long-term substitutes are treated as new teachers receiving intensive coaching, a grade-level mentor teacher, and additional release time to observe other teachers.
What are the professional growth opportunities for substitute teachers?
Excellent substitute teachers are our first recruits for permanent positions. Many of our current EFC teachers are former substitutes who demonstrated excellence.
What is the daily rate for substitute teacher with EFC?
The daily rate for both short- and long-term substitute teachers is $160.
How frequently are substitute teachers paid?
EFC and OUSD use the same pay schedule: work done from the 1st- 15th is paid the last day of the month; work done from the 16th -30th gets paid on the 15th of the month.
Am I entitled to any benefits?
EFC substitutes are temporary, part-time employees and do not receive any benefits.
If I apply to be a substitute teacher with OUSD, do I also need to apply to EFC?
Yes, OUSD and EFC are distinct organizations and run independent hiring processes.
